UK Number 40s: Travis - U16 Girls (1997)

This was the Top 40 debut for Travis which came before most people had really noticed them. They were really yet another Britpop band at this stage as it's similar in style to a few other Britpop bands from this era.

The fact Travis were a bit of an unknown entity at the time would have partly explained why this record only made number 40. The title would have also played a factor, people not wanting to take chances on what the song may be about. The lyrical content though is basically warning one to make sure a female they encounter is over 16.

Travis scored a 40, 39 and 38 in 3 of their first four Top 40 hits. By 1999 though they were nearer the other end of the charts and became one of the biggest indie bands of that era.
