2007: The End? - June

We're half way through the year and whilst the scores have generally been poor we are yet to have a month to score zero.

The number of new entries in June is 47 which is the highest number so far in 2007. The proportion of indie/garage rock records is back to around a third of them and once again they collectively score zero points.

One has to look to the dance music world to find the best record which is a close contest between 2 old timers, Armand Van Helden with "NYC Beat" and Chemical Brothers with "Do It Again". There's not a lot between the 2 records but I'm going to go with "NYC Beat" for the simple fact I know the Chemical Brothers have a better record to come later in the year.

The rest of the dance records are pretty crap. We have Bob Sinclar doing a poor remake of "Everybody's Free" and Corenell vs Lisa Marie Experience doing a poor remake of "Keep On Jumpin". Then there's Calvin Harris which is obviously shit and Kim Sozzi with a record that sounds like it could be by Cascada.

R Kelly had a hit with "I'm A Flirt" which I remember but came after the last album of his I bought. That said I did quite enjoy listening and it gets full marks. No points for Kelly Rowland or Justin Timberlake, some could legitimately argue they're not really R&B.

Rap wise we have one record from the UK and one from America and both score zero. Dizzee Rascal is the UK one, I never thought much of him when he first broke through when I was enjoying some UK rap on Channel U. The American one is Mims who I've never heard of.

We're relying on more old timers for the remainder of the points. Both Erasure and Simply Red had their final Top 40 hits to date with Simply Red getting full marks and Erasure getting half.

The Zimmers were old timers literally. A big group of OAPs got together to record a cover of "My Generation". Obviously not as good as the original but still worthy of half marks.

That just leaves the worst record which goes to Paramore with "Misery Business". I'm too old to know whether they were considered a credible guitar band or not, but to me they just sound like McFly with a female singer.

Here's a list of the records with the best on top, worst at the bottom and the good ones in green, OK ones in amber and rubbish ones in red (and in no particular order):

Score: 11%

Here's a look at the chart:

It's been a very up and down year so far but will we get our first zero month?
