2007: The End? - April

After only a number 40 from LCD Soundsystem stopped March from being a zero month you feel the first zero month isn't far away. Does this happen in April? No, it's quite a big improvement.

As is the trend in 2007, approximately a third of the new entries are from the indie/garage rock genre. Amongst these are Ocean Colour Scene and Ash. It seems far too late for both to be having Top 40 hits, it would be the last for Ocean Colour Scene but Ash would return later in the year. Both sound past their best.

There is however a half mark in the indie genre for the month which comes from The Enemy with "Away From Here". I remember someone liking them at the time and didn't hold out much hope given the quality of other indie music from around this time. When I heard them though I thought this isn't bad.

Another act having Top 40 hits long after you think they should have is Erasure with "I Could Fall In Love With You". It's not a patch on their hey day but still an enjoyable record to the extent that this is the best record this month.

The other records which get full marks are from the rap and R&B genres and both stood out at the time as modern rap/R&B that's actually quite good. There's "Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes, a sort of remake of "Breakfast In America" that works better than it should. Then there's "Don't Matter" by Akon, one of his better records.

Dance music was really thin on the ground this month. Faithless had their final Top 40 hit to date with "Music Matters" which gets half a mark. The only other dance record was "Feels Like Home" by Meck which is essentially a poor remake of "Don't You Want Me" by Felix with different vocals.

We have the Top 40 debut of Elliott Minor, a band I remember at the time without really knowing their music. It's a crossover between rock and classical music and I thought this record was alright.

The worst record goes to Mel C with "I Want Candy". I thought she did this earlier than 2007, but anyway it's a terrible cover.

Here's a list of the records with the best on top, worst at the bottom and the good ones in green, OK ones in amber and rubbish ones in red (and in no particular order):

Score: 15%

Here's a look at the chart:

It's anyone's guess as to how May is going to go.
