UK Charts Best Year Search: 1993

What's this all about?

Top 40

Best Song: Moby - I Feel It

This was his long awaited follow up to "Go" but it only made 38. Although this came out 2 years later than "Go" it appears on the same album which came out roughly half way between the two singles. Moby's early 90s material fits really well with British rave music so much so that I didn't realise he was American until the late 90s.

Worst Song: Taylor Dayne - Can't Get Enough Of Your Love

Yes that's right, Taylor Dayne's Top 40 career didn't end in the 80s. Here she is doing a piss poor cover of the Barry White record. It wasn't her last Top 40 hit either, she'd have one more.

Top 40 Review

We're into the era where reggae pop music was big. The two number one hits prior to this Top 40 are still in there, they are "All That She Wants" by Ace Of Base and "(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You" by UB40.

Inner Circle were back with their second and final Top 40 hit after a 14 year gap with "Sweat (A La La La La Long)". Then there's future chart toppers Chaka Demus & Pliers with their debut "Tease Me". Those I've mentioned are good, but there's also "What'cha Gonna Do" by Shabba Ranks and "Shout (It Out)" by Louchie Lou And Michie One which are crap.

East 17 have a cover of "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys which I remember being slated at the time but I quite liked it. The Pet Shop Boys themselves are also in there with "Can You Forgive Her?" which I also quite like.

Scottish techno group The Time Frequency have "The Power Zone EP" and all tracks on there are worth a listen. We also have some early Jamiroquai with "Blow Your Mind" from their debut album "Emergency On Planet Earth" which I own.

More typical of the music I was listening to at the time though is "Two Princes" by The Spin Doctors and "Cherub Rock" by The Smashing Pumpkins.

What is an eye opener from this Top 40 is that there are 17 acts in there who made their Top 40 debuts prior to the 90s. This doesn't include Coverdale Page, a collaboration between David Coverdale and Jimmy Page who had both been established musicians for many years by this point. The record in question "Take Me For A Little While" is not bad. 13 of those 17 records are crap though.

The 90s got off to a great start, but in 1993 the overall quality of music is no better than other years really.

Score: 14.5

Table

1993 was by far the poorest year of the 90s so far:
