We had the final Christmas number one from the Spice Girls in 1998 with "Goodbye" which was their third in a row. Geri Halliwell had already left the group by this point and Mel B and Mel C had both began their solo careers, the latter being in the charts at the same time with her collaboration with Bryan Adams "When You're Gone". They would go on hiatus after this song before making a brief comeback in 2000 and then again in 2007.
The biggest Christmas song of the year came from Jane McDonald with "Cruise Into Christmas" which was basically a medley of other Christmas songs. She made her name that year in the TV show "The Cruise" and this would be her only appearance in the UK Top 40.
Fat Les, who famously had a hit earlier in the year with "Vindaloo" also had a Christmas hit in 1998 with "Naughty Christmas (Goblin In the Office)". This made number 21 but wasn't the last we'd see of Fat Les as they'd be back in 200 with a song for the Euros under the name Fat Les 2000.
Then there were a couple of old ones in the charts with "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby and a dance version of "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade called "Merry Xmas Everybody 98".
