Here's the beginning of my annual series of posts looking at the Christmas charts every 10 years beginning in the 50s which this year begins with 1958.
This first Christmas song to chart in 1958 was a re-entry of the previous years Christmas number one "Mary's Boy Child" by Harry Belafonte. He also released a new Christmas song with "Son of Mary" but this only made number 18 which was lower than the number 10 the re-entry of "Mary's Boy Child" reached. He would only have one further Top 40 hit after this.
If you want to ask a trick question at a music quiz then here's one, What did Johnny Mathis have a Christmas hit in 1958? Some will say "When A Child Is Born" but they would be wrong, it was in fact "Winter Wonderland". He made his chart debut earlier in the year and this was his first charting Christmas record, but it only managed to make number 17.
The Christmas number one came from Conway Twitty with his debut hit "It's Only Make Believe". The following year though his Top 40 career would be over.
