Christmas 1988 came shortly after Scott and Charlene's (aka Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue)wedding on Neighbours. Both Kylie and Jason had already began their pop careers in 1988 and they collaborated in December with the song "Especially For You". Also in the charts was their wedding song, "Suddenly" by Angry Anderson.
Which one made Christmas number one? Neither did, that honour went to a 48 year old Cliff Richard with "Mistletoe & Wine". This wouldn't be his last Christmas number one either.
The other Christmas songs of 1988 were both parts of double a-sides and both covers. Bros did "Silent Night" as a double a-side with "Cat Amongst the Pigeons" which peaked at number 2 at the beginning of December before being pushed down to number 4 by Kylie & Jason and Angry Anderson.
Alexander O'Neal had a Christmas/New Year double a-side with "Christmas Song" and "Thank You For A Good Year". This reached number 30.
