UK Number 40s: Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell - Jingle Bell Rock (1962)

The final record to peak at 40 in 1962 was a Christmas record. Like with several of the hits to peak at 40 so far, it's a well known record but just not that particular version. Unlike the other acts to have had a number 40 in 1962, neither Chubby Checker or Bobby Rydell have had a number 1.

Prior to this record we had never had both artists in the Top 40 at the same time. Bobby Rydell made his chart debut in 1960 with "Wild One". Two more Top 40 hits followed that year but he wouldn't make the Top 40 again until this record.

Chubby Checker debuted in 1961 with "Pony Time", but his chart career never really got going until the start of 1962 when he eventually made 2 with "Let's Twist Again". It would be his only Top 10 hit, even "The Twist" only made 14 in the same year.

Whilst "Let's Twist Again" was still in the Top 40 in April 1962, Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell released "Teach Me To Twist" but this failed to make the Top 40, only reaching 45, so this was their more successful collaboration.

"Jingle Bell Rock" was written in 1957 by Joe Beal and Jim Boothe. The original and best known recording was by Bobby Helms, which never made the Top 40 initially but finally got to number 30 in 2019 thanks to the flood of Christmas songs you now get Christmas time. The first version to chart in the UK was by Max Bygraves in 1959 which reached 7.

The Top 40 careers of both artists would finish the following year, with Chubby Checker having a final hit with "What Do Ya Say" and Bobby Rydell with "Forget Him", though Chubby Checker would return again with a re-issue of "Let's Twist Again" and "The Twist" plus featuring on the Fat Boys take on "The Twist" called "Yo Twist", but that doesn't really count.
