It's quite a familiar story when you have a female singer who features on a rappers record and then goes on to have a record of her own. That's what seemed to have happened when Amerie was featured vocalist on "Paradise" by LL Cool J and then had a hit with "1 Thing".
It turns out she had a Top 40 hit prior to that LL Cool J collaboration though. This was her Top 40 debut. The original version of this record was Amerie on her own and then the remix featured rapper Ludacris.
It was also the Top 40 debut as songwriter for Rich Harrison. He would go on to have greater chart success as songwriter of "Can't Nobody" by Kelly Rowland and "Crazy In Love" by Beyonce as well as the bigger Amerie hit "1 Thing". None of his Top 40 compositions aside from this charted outside of the Top 10.
Amerie clocked up 6 Top 40 hits in total with the final one coming in 2007 whereas Ludacris continued to mostly be the featured rapper on Top 40 hits with his final one to date coming in 2012.
