2007: The End? - September

After what was an exceptional August by 2007 standards the question was whether it was a one off or if the charts actually were improving around this time.

We're back to around a third of the new entries being from the indie/garage rock genre. No full marks from the genre this time but there was half a mark for Twang with "Two Lovers".

I must have given up on rap and R&B by this point because we have records from Taio Cruz and Sean Kingston who I both consider to be after my time. Akon was borderline in that respect and then there was Craig David who could never really top his garage roots. The collective score here is zero.

There was however still some decent dance records getting into the charts though including the best record for the month which is "The Salmon Dance" by the Chemical Brothers. I always thought the Chemical Brothers were a bit of a mixed bag with their music but I consider this record to be the best thing they've ever done. So much so that I bought a Chemical Brothers album for the first time off the back of it. I also remember this was the last tune to be played on the last Jo Good episode of the Galaxy Chart on MTV Dance at the end of the year. The Galaxy Chart wasn't the only era drawing to a close, this was also the final Top 40 hit to date for the Chemical Brothers.

Elsewhere we have "The Creeps (Get On The Dancefloor)" by Freaks, a good record that gets full marks though I wish they hadn't added vocals to it for the single release. Then there's half marks for Armand Van Helden with "I Want Your Soul", a sort of remake of "Do You Want It Right Now" but done with some dignity.

The rest of the dance records are just cheese, there's "Lets Dance" by Hi Tack, "Bad Girl (At Night)" by Dave Spoon & Lisa Mafia and "Don't Mess With My Man" by Booty Luv. No points for any of those.

Elvis Presley was back one last time with a yet to be charted single. "My Baby Left Me" came right at the beginning of his career and I think it's worthy of half marks.

Onto the worst song then which goes to Natalie Imbruglia with "Glorious". How the fuck was she still having hits in 2007? It was her last one though.

Here's a list of the records with the best on top, worst at the bottom and the good ones in green, OK ones in amber and rubbish ones in red (and in no particular order):

Score: 12%

Here's a look at the chart:

It has come crashing down but still better than a lot of 2006. October could go either way.
