Christmas Charts Rated: 2010

 Top 40

Best Song: John Cage - 4.33 (Cage Against The Machine Version)

I actually bought this at the time. After Rage Against the Machine beat the previous years X Factor winner to Christmas number one there was a campaign to do the same again in 2010. The problem was there was more than one campaign so it was spread too thin to succeed. I just loved the concept of silence being better than whatever rubbish the X Factor winner comes up with.

Worst Song: Adele - Make You Feel My Love

One of the great mysteries of the modern era is how the hell does Adele manage to sell so many records. All her songs sound the same and they're all boring and miserable and completely unlistenable. I never made it to the end of this record as I was completely losing the will to live, so it's almost a no brainer that this is the worst song of this Top 40.

Top 40 Review

Just the 4 Christmas hits in this Top 40. Pogues and Mariah Carey return to the Top 40, it was the first year of the god awful "Christmas Lights" by Coldplay plus there's a novelty Christmas record from Corey Taylor called "X-M@$".

When I was reviewing 2010 for my best year search I was surprised at how high it finished. I remember it being a particularly dreadful year for music generally speaking and thought it would be a serious candidate for the worst year.

My theory afterwards was that most if not all the good records from that year came at once and this Christmas chart review more or less proves that to be correct.

One of the records I did like from the middle of the year remains in the charts at Christmas which is "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem which I like despite the fact it features the god awful Rihanna.

Speaking of Rihanna, she appears on no less than 5 records in this particular Top 40. Needless to say none of the other records involving her get any points.

We were at a time when all corners of the music world were coming together in the form of electropop or EDM. All of it dreadful and doesn't contribute any of the points.

The only rock music in the charts comes from Biffy Clyro thanks to the X Factor winner covering their song. We also have some surf rock with "Surfin' Bird" by Trashmen which was part of a campaign to stop X Factor getting the Christmas number one.

An all round terrible Top 40 then and inevitably the score is lower than the 6.5 it got in the best year search.

Score: 2

Table

The last 17 years all finished in the bottom 18 in my best year search. Look how far ahead 1962 is from the rest of the pack now we're looking at Christmas week:
