Best Song: Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End)
This was the 3rd Top 40 hit from the "Loose" album. I own that album and it was quite possibly this record coming out as a single that convinced me to buy them album. I thought all the singles from it were decent and also think the album is good overall.
Worst Song: Amy Winehouse - Rehab
When Amy Winehouse first came about she was one of those people you couldn't help but know existed but could easily avoid her music. Her drug problems became well documented and then came this record about how she refuses to go to rehab. I remember thinking how dreadful this record was the first time I heard it, and then there was no avoiding it.
Top 40 Review
2006 was the final year you needed a physical release to be eligible for the charts. In terms of old Christmas records we had Pogues and Slade. There was also a novetly Christmas record from Ricky Tomlinson with "Christmas My Arse" and another new Christmas song in "December Brings Me Back To You" by Andy Abraham featuring Michael Underwood. There was also a version of "Last Christmas" by Crazy Frog. As usual it's zeroes all around.
We're in an era where Cliff Richard was still getting in the Top 40 at Christmas time. We were still in the infancy of the X Factor though so it was just that years winner Leona Lewis in the Top 40. Goes without saying there's no points for them.
My memory tells me it was the era that indie music was still dominating the Top 40, but the facts tell me there were just 2 indie records in there which both came from Razorlight and both get zero.
We were also in the era before EDM was really a thing, but what we did have in those days was eurodance in the form of Cascada and Micky Modelle. The Cascada one is a Savage Garden cover and is particularly dreadful.
In terms of more proper dance music it wasn't great either. I've given half marks to "PATT (Party All The Time)" by Sharam and "Yeah Yeah" by Bodyrox featuring Luciana. Fedde Le Grande, Booty Luv and Queen vs Miami Project all get zeroes though.
Getting full marks though is Scissor Sisters with "I Don't Feel Like Dancing". I remember it being a breath of fresh air at a time when there wasn't much in the way of decent modern music coming on the music channels.
The surprise one came from Take That with their comeback single "Patience". I remember being amazed at the fact I found it quite good at the time.
The more modern boy bands/girl groups/pop singers were all getting zeroes though.
The original target from the best year search was 6, this has fallen short
Score: 4
Table
2006 is 2nd in the table which is possible where each year will come in the next few weeks given the anomaly that was 1962:
