Christmas Charts Rated: 2002

 Top 40

Best Song: Ja Rule ft Bobby Brown - Thug Lovin

To be honest there's not much between the records that I actually like in this particular Top 40. I've gone for this one because I was very pro Ja Rule at the time. It was the comeback record for Bobby Brown who hasn't been in the Top 40 since. Very much a rap and R&B crossover record but I liked a lot of that.

Worst Song: Holly Valance - Naughty Girl

So many candidates for worst song but this one pips in for the simple fact I remember getting irritated by this record at the time. I seem to recall there being some stage set up that seemed completely pointless. It was also completely pointless having a Neighbours actress transition into a music career because nobody watched Neighbours anymore.

Top 40 Review

2002 was the year of "Popstars: The Rivals" and the Top 3 consisted of contestants on that show. We had female winners Girls Aloud at 1, male winners One True Voice at 2 and novelty contestants Cheeky Girls at 3.

We also had the original "Popstars" runners up Liberty X in the charts along with Pop Idol contestants Will Young, Gareth Gates and Darius. Sticking with the TV themes we also had S Club (minus the 7 after Paul left) and S Club Juniors in the charts.

Also TV related we have Zippy & George from Rainbow with a novelty record and there's also a record from American puppeteer Liam Lynch. So far it's a big fat zero.

We have 3 Spanish acts in the charts. There's the god awful "The Ketchup Song (Asereje)" by Las Ketchup plus records from Enrique Iglesias and DJ Sammy. Again no points there.

From Germany though at number 40 we have Scooter with "Posse (I Need You On The Floor)" which does get a point. You know what you're getting with Scooter.

We have the usual boy bands/girl groups in there but more points are being contributed by former boy band members. We have the debut hit for Justin Timberlake with "Like I Love You" which is good fun and "Feel" by Robbie Williams which I always considered a solid comeback record for him.

The other records which get full marks are "Lose Yourself" by Eminem who would often deliver the good. Then there was "Dilemma" by Nelly ft Kelly Rowland which I liked enough to buy the single.

A couple of half marks adds to the score but it's still very much in single figures.

Score: 7

Table

That felt a pretty bad Top 40, but it's the 2nd best one I've listened to so far and only slightly worse than the middle of the year:
