In this journey through the UK number 40s so far one thing has become apparent, that often they aren't as obscure as you'd think. We've had a sizeable number of records that are minor hits for well known artists, but there have been some artists that only a handful of people have heard of.
This record fits the latter. In fact we have the first act to feature in this series who doesn't have a Wikipedia page. The song on the other hand is much better known, just not this version.
It was originally a hit in 1956 for the Hilltoppers, but then later on that year the original version by the Platters also charted. They reached 3 and 5 respectively. Then in 1964 another cover charted which would be the final hit for Mark Wynter that made 38.
This cover wasn't the final version to chart either, in 1974 Ringo Starr had his final Top 40 hit with his version making 28, and then in 1979 Child had their final hit with their version making 33.
As for Jeff Collins, as you could imagine there is little I could find about him on the internet. One thing I did find was this article that said he inspired to make music again after this song appeared on YouTube. It also said he was a taxi driver at the time of the article.
