Gilbert O'Sullivan becomes the 15th act to have had both a number 1 and a number 40. The difference between Gilbert O'Sullivan and the other acts so far was that his number 40 came before his number 1.
He made his chart debut in late 1970 with "Nothing Rhymed" which made number 8 and this was the follow up single. Whilst it only just scraped into the Top 40 in the UK, it was a number one in Holland, as was "Nothing Rhymed".
He had another minor hit in 1971 with "We Will", but 1972 was when his popularity ascended with 3 Top 10 singles followed by the number one single "Clair" at the end of the year. His 2nd and final number one "Get Down" came in early 1973.
He would only have one further Top 40 hit beyond 1975 but continues to make music, having released his 19th studio in 2018.
