The Wedding Present had been around since the 80s and were big within the indie scene at the time. They made their first real impact on the charts in 1992 when they had a different Top 40 hit every month. This brought their total number of Top 40 hits from 4 at the start of the year to 16 at the end.
They would return to the Top 40 until 1997 until this record made number 40. There were singles in between that never made the Top 40. By this point David Gedge and Simon Smith were the only remaining band members from their 1992 hit parade era.
Since they had last been in the Top 40 Britpop had established itself as the guitar music of choice for the UK and The Wedding Present didn't really fit in with that. I would speculate that they had enough of a following to have stopped caring about the Top 40 by this point.
The band did however call it a day the same year, but did reunite 7 years later and then had one final Top 40 hit in 2005. When I say reunite, it was more David Gedge bringing back the name with an ever rotating number of musicians behind him. Simon Smith wasn't one of them.
