UK Number 40s: Soundgarden - Blow Up The Outside World (1996)

Soundgarden formed in 1984 and were the first of the big four Grunge bands of Seattle to form. They were also really the last to hit their commercial peak, with their big hit "Black Hole Sun" coming in 1994 by which point Nirvana were finished and Pearl Jam had moved onto other styles.

The success of the big four didn't really translate into the UK Top 40 with Nirvana being the only ones to score Top 10 hits during the grunge era. Soundgardens big hit "Black Hole Sun" made number 12.

By the end of 1996 Britpop had already taken the crown from grunge as the popular guitar based music the general public were into. Even Britpop was arguably on a downward spiral by this point.

It may therefore come as no surprise to heard that this was the final UK Top 40 hit for Soundgarden. It was also almost at the end of the road for Soundgarden too, with the band splitting up in early 1997.
