Christmas Charts Rated: 2009

 Top 40

Best Song: Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

It was quite easy picking the best song. It topped the charts after a campaign to stop the X Factor winner getting the Christmas number one again. Originally released in 1993 this was a record I loved at the time and I now consider it a classic.

Worst Song: Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love

There were so many candidates but I've gone for the solo debut for Cheryl Cole. I recall at the time the media were calling her the nations sweetheart but I never met anyone who thought the same and to me she was the miserable bitch from Girls Aloud after she never stopped complaining on a behind the scenes documentary about them a few years prior.

Top 40 Review

I mentioned than 9 of the years from 2011-2022 were in the bottom 9 of my best year search, you only had to go back another 2 years to find the 2nd worst.

As mentioned the best song was the chart topper that originally came out in 1993, the 2nd best song was the number 40 "It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas" by the Pet Shop Boys which was a song from 1997 and became the final Top 40 hit to date for them.

There was an almost new Christmas song in the Top 40 from George Michael with "December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)" whilst there were old Christmas songs from the Pogues and from Mariah Carey in there. All get a zero though.

Also getting a collective zero is all the electropop and EDM rubbish in there. Will I Am appears 3 times, twice with the Black Eyed Peas and once in a collaboration with Cheryl Cole who appears twice. Some stronger contenders for worst song in there.

Also appearing twice were former X Factor winners Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. Other X Factor contestants were in there too including the winner who didn't claim Christmas number one Joe McElderry with "The Climb". That record was originally by Miley Cyrus who's also in the Top 40 with her version.

We also have Alicia Keys appearing twice, once in collaboration with Jay-Z on "Empire State Of Mind" and on her own with "Doesn't Mean Anything". The latter is where the only other points come from and gets half a mark.

It only needed to get a score of 3 to match the score in the best year search but just falls short.

Score: 2.5

Table

A poor score but it's the joint best year so far. Given the order we're doing this each year should top the table as we do them:
