UK Number 40s: The Cult - Wild Hearted Son (1991)

We've all heard the story of grunge establishing itself to the masses in 1991 and killing off all rock/metal music that came before it in the process. Despite this there were several 'hair metal' bands who would continue to enjoy chart success beyond 1991.

However what we have here is an example of an 80s band who weren't really a 'hair metal' one, but just a couple of months before Nirvana hit the Top 40 with their debut The Cult had their final original Top 40 hit which made number 40.

Like with several rock bands, The Cult aren't a band who's success you can really measure by how they did in the singles chart. To the casual listener they're the band who did "She Sells Sanctuary" but in their heyday they were much bigger than that. They were a British band who cracked America which is something not many bands can claim.

They are also credited as a band who influenced grunge as opposed to a band that grunge stood against. But in a way that was part of the problem, they weren't actually a grunge band. It's a bit like rave music of 1991 being influenced by acid house but at the raves it was music of the moment being played not acid house.

The final Top 40 effort to date from The Cult was a remix of "She Sells Sanctuary" in 1993 which reached number 15, the same position it reached the first time round.
