Best Song: Hardy Caprio ft Digdat - Guten Tag
This record is an example of why I think the charts have improved in more recent times. As far as I can tell, these aren't artists that are being force fed to us by the media. I wouldn't have a clue who they were if I was to see them walking down the street. I live in London so I may have even seen them walk down the street. I would therefore speculate they're getting into the charts because enough people like the music.
Worst Song: Miley Cyrus - Mothers Daughter
Back in 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus did "Achy Breaky Heart" it all seemed a bit of harmless fun. He got his 15 minutes of fame and we got to laugh at his silly lyrics and his mullet. Little did we know at the time that his wife was pregnant with no doubt one of the most irritating celebrities of the 21st century. In fact there's seemingly no end of Cyrus's all wanting a slice of the pie with Billy Ray's wife appearing in the video to this. As for the music, well let's just say even "Achy Breaky Heart" sounds good compared to this.
Top 40 Review
Once again rap is the dominant genre in the charts which is a good and bad thing. Good in that we have some obscure rappers making solid if not spectacular records that the kids are listening to. Bad in that we have the obligatory Drake records and a record that features guest vocals from Billy Ray Cyrus.
The rap count is 17 with a pretty even split between ones that get marks and ones that don't. The ones which do get marks are all British which is probably because the American equivalent doesn't have hope in hell of charting here, the same way the British stuff doesn't have a hope in hell of charting there.
Once again all the records which get any marks are rap records. The other half of the charts is your usual EDM/electropop/Ed Sheeran & his clones. What it is lacking though is a David Guetta or Calvin Harris record which is always a good thing.
It may have been around this time that I started to think there charts were improving. I noticed we were getting less and less EDM as the year went on and found the rise of rap in the charts quite encouraging even if it wasn't to the standard of rap music from my era.
The charts were still poor though, just not as poor as the era where the EDM/electropop/Ed Sheeran clones made up the bulk of the Top 40.
Score: 5
Table
Better than most years of the decade but only to the standard of 1962:
