UK Charts Best Year Search: 2020

What's this all about?

Top 40

Best Song: Powfu ft Beabadoobee - Death Bed

I've said this before, chipmunk vocals divides opinion but as a happy hardcore fan I like them. It does sound like it could have been on Channel U in 2003, but that's no bad thing. Powfu is from Canada and would have only been 4 in 2003 so it's unlikely that was on purpose.

Worst Song: Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

This on the other hand sounds like it could have been done by anyone and everyone in 2009, and that is a bad thing. It's a collaboration between 2 of the most irritating acts from the last decade, or of all time for that matter.

Top 40 Review

Rap was the biggest it had ever been in 2020 with almost half the Top 40 hits from that year falling under that genre. In this particular Top 40 there were 17.

Amongst those was "Gooba" by 6ix9ine, a very aggressive tune that's not very musical at all but it's a breath of fresh air amongst the modern formulaic music. His other effort in the Top 40 "Trollz" featuring Nicki Minaj is a bit rubbish though.

The bulk of the points are coming from the rap tunes, but there is a half mark coming from the sole R&B record in the charts "Go Crazy" by Chris Brown & Young Thug. This is the first time since 2015 that a non-rap record has not got a zero.

Elsewhere, whilst there is a lack of David Guetta or Calvin Harris there are a number of deputies and EDM/Electropop makes up the biggest chunk outside of rap. As for Ed Sheeran and his clones, there's an Ed Sheeran tune and his clone with a record is Sam Fischer.

What does seem apparent in the modern era is that whilst EDM/electropop falls way behind rap in terms of quantity it has much more longevity which means the charts perhaps haven't improved as much as it seems.

I'm not going to pretend we're getting decent scores, but we are saying the rise of rap has made the charts twice as good as the years prior.

Score: 5.5
