Vibealite @ Venue 44, Mansfield 01/12/1995

 

Brisk

Another rave and another end of an era coming up. This was the penultimate Vibealite event to be held at Venue 44 with the final one coming on Boxing Day. It had been the home of Vibealite since they began in 1993 and they had held at least one rave every month there since except for in January.

In an era where DJs sets were getting shorter in order to get as many names on the line up, Vibealite made a point with this event to buck that trend by giving the DJs 2 hours each.

I've posted the Brisk set which follows his usual first half Scottish/Dutch followed by the 2nd half of English records, just more time of each.

On this list, "Bumrush" by Re-Charge appears on the Brisk tape which is part of the reason I've posted it as it's a record I knew at the time but have only just discovered what it actually is. Didn't help by the fact I thought it was saying "pump up the sound".

Also something to note is that DJ Quicksilver in this list isn't the same DJ who had a hit with "Belissima" a couple of years later, it was an alias of Brisk himself. 

We also have "Don't Leave Me Alone" which was Paul Elstak's next big hit in Holland.

With just 4 weekends of the year left it's safe to see each event featured from now on will be the last time it features this year, so it's farewell to Vibealite and Venue 44.

Tomorrows World @ Venue 44, Mansfield 14/07/1995

 

Loftgroover

Whilst last weeks rave at Helter Skelter was billed as being the best of both worlds, this weeks rave does the opposite. 

Tomorrows World was an offshoot of Vibealite. It was held at the same venue and run by the same people as Vibealite but the music policy was essentially the music you'd hear at the technodrome at Helter Skelter.

This means that for the first time in the year I get to listen to a Loftgroover tape which is the one I posted. Basically the stand out music from these sort of arenas was gabber which was harder and faster than hardcore. Amongst that you had Loftgroover who took the hard and fast aspect to another level.

The tape pack spans both the July and August event without specifying which event each tape is from. As a result it's not known which event the Brisk tape was from. The rest can be determined from the fact the remaining DJs only played at one of the events.

The line up included Dutch DJ Warlock who had played at the previous weeks Helter Skelter in the technodrome so maybe he was doing a bit of a UK tour at the time.

Also on the line up was Darrion Kelly, the Australian DJ who moved to the UK with Carl Cox taking him under his wing. I think it's the first time I've heard a set from him, its a pretty solid one. He would play there again, nor would Trevor Rockliffe who was also on the line up.

Due to the fact it was always a bit of a mystery what tunes were being played along with the fact there's not much in the way of tracklisting on the internet it's difficult to establish what new for 95 tunes are in there.

The mystery keeps it interesting though.

Vibealite @ Venue 44, Mansfield 24/02/1995

This week takes us to Venue 44 in Mansfield. Again this is a small town that I've never been to, but it's the fact Mansfield is a small town that made this venue attractive to promotors. Basically venues in big cities were having problems with gangs, but this was less likely to be an issue in a small town.

The event is Vibealite who are probably best remembered for holding events at this venue which was where they started and held the bulk of their events up to the end of 1995 when the venue closed down.

After 3 weeks of events which were hardcore only it's good to be at a mixed genre event again. 

Tape wise, it's a somewhat strange but very welcome choice of what sets were recorded. They come from Vinylgroover, Fergus and Ned Ryder. 

There's no argument that Vinylgroover was a big DJ of his time, but in early 1995 he was still a relatively new to the bigger events and this was his Vibealite debut. This was the happy hardcore set and there was one new for 95 tune that hadn't been heard on sets so far this year in "NRG" by DJ Hood.

At the end of the Vinylgroover tape came a couple of tunes from the DJ SY, one of which was "Pump Me Up" by Stu J which was also new for 95. DJ SY along with Brisk were arguably the biggest names playing that night but there appears to be no recording of their sets.

Fergus was one of the resident DJs of Vibealite along with Rush. His set was more of a hard techno one with Belgium and Germany dominating the tune selection. There were a number of new for 1995 records in there, though take with a pinch of salt given it's quite possible some were played in 1994 at raves overseas. These were:

Ned Ryder was a jungle DJ, so we have a good mixture of genres tape wise. I've posted his mix mainly because of the lack of jungle we've had from the last 3 weeks. Unsurprisingly there's a handful of new for 95 records on this set which were:

It would have been good to have had more tapes from this event, but what we do have is a good mixture. I feel this won't be the last trip to Vibealite in 1995 either.
