UK Number 40s: Polyphonic Spree - Light And Day (2003)

I remember the Polyphonic Spree at the time, they were just about the only music group that could give the So Solid Crew a run for their money in terms of number of members. I was therefore quite surprised to learn that their big hit only made number 40.

This was actually their 2nd Top 40 hit, their Top 40 debut "Hanging Around" came out in late 2002 and did one place better at number 39. One further hit for them came later on in 2003 with "Soldier Girl" which became their highest charting hit reaching number 26.

It's really this record that people would most likely know even if they didn't realise it. In 2010 it was found to be the most performed song in UK television advertising.

There's a certain irony to that fact. The group was formed by Tim DeLaughter after Wes Berggren from his previous band Tripping Daisy died. It portrays the image of love and positivity but that fact more or less confirms it's merely a money making machine for him.
