As the story goes, Nirvana became a worldwide household name in 1991 and with it came a bunch of other grunge and alternative rock bands breaking though to the mainstream. The death of Kurt Cobain in 1994 cemented Nirvanas place in music history whilst 1994 saw both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam score their biggest UK hits to date. There was even a grunge chart topper that year from Stiltskin.
By 1995 though grunge and alternative rock started to fall from favour in place of britpop. By 1996 an alternative rock band from America with no prior UK chart hits was unlikely to make any significant impact on the UK charts.
They were no one hit wonders though. They had a further Top 40 hit in the year 2000 with "Wonderful" which fared better at 36 and was their only Top 40 hit in their native America.
Like with a lot of alternative rock bands, having a big following with little in the way of chart success is the ultimate goal and I think Everclear achieved that.
