Best Song: Artful Dodger ft Lifford - Please Don't Turn Me On
At the start of the year 2000 I really didn't want to like Artful Dodger because of how mainstream they were. By the end of the year though I owned their "It's All About The Stragglers" album which is excellent. This was Top 40 hit number 4 for them and unlike the previous 3 I would say this ones more for listening to at home than for the dancefloor, but is still undoubtedly a UK garage record and danceable if that's what you want to do,
Worst Song: Destiny's Child - Independent Women
Me and a lot of my friends have never seen eye to eye when it comes to music. At the time of this record though we could all agree that Destiny's Child made the shittest music. It's only appropriate that I pick this record as the worst song then. I never really knew who was in Destiny's Child at the time, but in hindsight they were nothing more than a vehicle for launching Beyonce's solo career which is arguably even worse.
Top 40 Review
Realistically there were 3 genuine candidates for Christmas number one. Westlife were probably the favourites given they'd topped the charts with all their prior hits, but they failed to top the charts for the first time and settled for number 2.
Easily the best of the 3 candidates was "Stan" by Eminem which I loved the moment I heard it on his album. The issue was everybody had the album so there was no point in buying the single.
The winner though was Bob the Builder. I can only imagine it was because parents thought it would make a good Christmas present for their young children.
In terms of Christmas records we had a sort of mash up of The Wombles and Roy Wood/Wizzard which was "I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Christmas" by The Wombles ft Roy Wood. There was also a record called "At This Time Of Year" which presumably referred to Christmas which was by Craig, the winner of Big Brother. No points for either record.
It was the year if UK garage but the only other garage record aside from the Artful Dodger was "No Good 4 Me" by Oxide & Neutrino ft Megaman which was a record illustrating garage losing it's way in my opinion.
Hard house was also popular at the time and there were 3 hard house records in the Top 40 which all contributed some points to the score. It was also full marks from the 2 house records which included "One More Time" by Daft Punk
In the rap world we had the excellent "Gravel Pit" by Wu-Tang Clan, but on the other end of the scale was Jay-Z with another shit record which was "I Just Wanna Love You (Give It 2 Me)".
R&B was a mixed bag. As already mentioned there was Destiny's Child, but the others not up to scratch were by Sisqo and Whitney Houston. We had some decent ones from Wyclef Jean, Craig David and Kandi.
Lots of the usual cheesy pop music from your boy bands/girl groups/solo artists which collectively gets a big fat zero.
There's enough decent material in there though to get the score into double figures.
Score: 11
Table
I've definitely felt this Christmas chart was by far the best of the 21st century listened to so far, but it falls slightly short of the best year score:
