UK Number 40s: D:Ream - The Power (Of All The Love In The World) (1995)

These days D:Ream are best known as the band Professor Brian Cox was in to fund his PhD. That's always sounded a bit back to front to me, normally one studies for something to fall back on if they don't make it in music. It took D:Ream a while to properly break through too.

In reality D:Ream was Peter Cunnah with a revolving door of session and touring musicians which included Brian Cox. Their debut single "U R the Best Thing" failed to reach the Top 40 when first released in 1992 and reached 19 when released in 1993. In between these releases was their big hit "Things Can Only Get Better" which was a minor hit when first released in 1993.

A couple more minor hits charted in 1993 before a re-released of "Things Can Only Get Better" topped the charts in early 1994. It was then 3rd time lucky for "U R the Best Thing" which made number 4. A couple more minor hits from debut album "D:ream On Vol. 1" followed in 1994.

Then in 1995 came album number 2 "World". With them now being established it got off to a good start with lead single "Shoot Me With Your Love" making the Top 10 with piano coming from Jools Holland.

Follow up "Party Up The World" didn't do as good making number 20 and then came this which made number 40. Vocal duties were shared with dance music vocalist TJ Davis. It would be their final original Top 40 hit to date.

They would be in the Top 40 one more time in 1997 though with another re-issue of "Things Can Only Get Better" thanks to it's use by Tony Blair in the election. They had become victims of their own success, they had their big hit and nobody cared about what else they had to offer.
