UK Number 40s: Buddy Holly & The Crickets - You've Got Love (1964)

Buddy Holly & The Crickets is a name known to pretty much everyone who knows a thing or two about music, I'd say to many people who know nothing about music as well.

However what may not be that well known is that there were records by Buddy Holly and records by The Crickets. This was actually the only UK Top 40 hit credited to Buddy Holly & The Crickets, the rest were credited to one or the other.

Prior to Buddy Holly's death in 1959, he had 5 solo hits and The Crickets had 4 hits. The Crickets were the more successful of the 2 chart wise with 3 of the 4 hits bettering Buddy Holly's highest position to date of 5, included their number one debut "That'll Be The Day".

Following Buddy Holly's death he had his first number one with "It Doesn't Matter Anymore". A further 10 posthumous hits followed prior to this record. The Crickets meanwhile continued without Buddy Holly and had a further 6 hits up to this point.

Therefore I would assume the reason this particular record was credited to Buddy Holly & The Crickets was to distinguish it from the post-Buddy Holly records for The Crickets. This means that both Buddy Holly and The Crickets become the 8th and 9th acts to have had both a Number 1 and Number 40.

It was originally recorded in 1957 and was written by someone who had already achieved a Number 1 and Number 40 by 1964, Roy Orbison. It came at a time when Roy Orbison was about to score 2 number one records in a row.

Following this single, both The Crickets and Buddy Holly would have one more Top 40 hit later on in the year, The Crickets with "(They Call Her) La Bamba" and Buddy Holly with "Love's Made A Fool Of You" which almost have him his second Number 40, but did one better reaching 39.
