Top 30 in 1997 Reviewed: Week 30

Here's my weekly look at the Top 30 from 27 years ago. The plan is for these posts to go out at 17:30 on a Friday.

Here is the Top 40 in full.

Obviously some of the records will be the same as last week so therefore the review will be the same for these. I've indicated which ones are new so you can skip the others if you read last weeks post.

Once again my opinions are inevitably going to differ from other people, but I'm not trying to convince anyone something is good or rubbish, I'm simply giving my opinion.

So this is the top 30 from this week in 1997 with my verdict on each record:

Massive Attack were back with this being the lead single from their 3rd album "Mezzanine". Their debut hit "Unfinished Sympathy" was already being celebrated as a classic in 1997 which no doubt helped this to become their highest charting hit to that point. Their "Mezzanine" album though was another classic in the making.

Verdict - Good

Grace were now finished from a Top 40 perspective in terms of original hits, but still had remixes to come starting with this which originally charted a year earlier. I wouldn't say this remix does anything much to it really but crucially it doesn't ruin it and I like the original.

Verdict - Good

This record appeared in the Top 40 I reviewed for my best year search. I found it to be better than I remember it being. At the time I wrote it off, but it's actually not bad. Not sure I like it enough to give it full marks, but it's definitely worthy of half marks.

Verdict - OK

When I was on Champions League Popmaster I'd say the easiest question I had was to give the surname of Rosie who had a hit in 1997 with "Closer Than Close". I remember this very well at the time and it was one of those records I was supposed to like but wasn't convinced by. It's aged really well though and has become a bit of a classic.

Verdict - Good

I try not to use the expression ahead of it's time too much because in reality only a small number of records can be. This however was ahead of it's time because it appears on the Kiss in Ibiza 99 compilation and sounds well at home with the genuine 1999 trance records in there.

Verdict - Good

This of course was the theme song for the TV show Friends. I used to watch Friends back in the 90s and I liked it but I have to say it's not aged very well. The theme music though was always shit, but it was probably intended to be that way.

Verdict - Rubbish

I remember having a pretty negative view of the Super Furry Animals in the 90s but then retrospectively discovered they were your usual boring indie band and have some interesting records. Now I'm listening to all the ones that got into the Top 30 I'm now thinking I had some justification as some of their records were boring too such as this.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was the Top 40 debut for No Doubt in 1996 but only made number 38. It fared better after they'd topped the charts with "Don't Speak". It's different to "Don't Speak" and has a decent beat to it. The guitaring is pretty decent too, but not quite enough about it for me to truly like it.

Verdict - OK

After they reached number 3 with "Bodyshakin" which sounded like they were doing a Backstreet Boys record, they do the same again by doing what sounds more like a Boyzone record. Once again, this isn't a good thing.

Verdict - Rubbish

When I was doing my search for the best year this appeared in the Top 40 I looked at in 1997 and I picked this as the worst song. It's almost like The Vengaboys before The Vengaboys and even has a name that implies the members would be male but has female members too.

Verdict - Rubbish

I would say it's quite an achievement for a Christian rock group like Delirious? to have a Top 40 hit, but to have several is quite spectacular. That said, if you put the Christian rock aspect to one side it doesn't really sound too different to a boring indie record.

Verdict - Rubbish

Babyface was the songwriter and producer on many big hits, but this was his only Top 10 hit as an artist. This record also gave Stevie Wonder his first Top 10 hit since 1988 and final one to date. It's a fantastic collaboration and proof that Stevie Wonder had at least one good record left in him after he did you known what.

Verdict - Good

I believe Hanson were the first band younger than me to top the charts. The fact the lead singers voice was yet to break gave that one away. It was the only song most people remember from them, but unfortunately they did have others.

Verdict - Rubbish

It had been nearly 4 years since Eternal had made their Top 40 debut but it took until this, their 13th Top 40 hit to top the charts. It did sound like they'd finally cheered up in this record have had a string of rather miserable hits. All was not well behind the scenes though as this would be the penultimate Top 40 hit with Kelle Bryan in the group. Still a rubbish song though.

Verdict - Rubbish

The only Top 40 hit from their "The Art Of War" album and their final Top 40 hit of the 90s. It was yet another record from the "Batman & Robin" soundtrack. I guess the dark nature of their music suits the dark nature of the Batman movies.

Verdict - Good

This was the 3rd Top 40 hit for Todd Terry under his own name and the first one that's not a cover. It's also the highest charting Top 40 hit to date for Todd Terry. It's the same sort of soulful house music as it's predecessor but clearly a different record.

Verdict - Good

The Verve had been around since 1990, released their first album in 1993 and first hit the Top 40 in 1995. This record though was the beginning of their commercial peak. It's got a famous video of Richard Ashcroft walking down the street barging into everybody. That's about as exciting as this record gets.

Verdict - Rubbish

After scoring his first number one with a hit from a movie, R Kelly was back in the Top 10 again with a hit from another movie which this time is "Batman & Robin". That fact it's a song about a fictional city from Batman makes it a bit difficult to take seriously, but R Kelly pulls this off really well to the point you can easily forget that fact.

Verdict - Good

This was the final Top 40 hit of the 90s for Shaggy before his wilderness years which even brought about rumours he had died as I recall. It's a cover of the Erma Franklin record with Shaggy adding a few more bits to it. It bit cheesy but decent nonetheless.

Verdict - Good

I would say this is the first sign of the wheels falling off for the solo career of Gary Barlow with this record not making the Top 10. It's a cover of a country record by Joe Diffie. As he was the main songwriter in Take That it is baffling that he didn't write 2 of his first 3 solo hits. I get the feeling this was providing Ronan Keating with inspiration for his solo career.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was the first of 2 Top 40 hits for Changing Faces and the only time they'll feature as their other hit never made the Top 30. It was written and produced by R Kelly and I think you can tell. He sure knew how to write a good record.

Verdict - Good

Yet another late 90s Michael Jackson record that charted pretty high despite having little impact in the grand scheme of things. It would however be his last Top 40 hit of the 90s. He's teamed up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the usual writers for his sister Janet on "History" and with Teddy Riley on "Ghosts". Both are instantly forgettable though.

Verdict - Rubbish Rubbish

Despite this record making the Top 10, the wheels were also started to fall off Robbie Williams solo career at this point. It was his first of many that he wrote in collaboration with Guy Chambers. Although not as blatant as it's predecessor, it does still sound like he's trying to make an Oasis record.

Verdict - Rubbish

The 2nd Top 40 hit for a band who completely passed me by at the time. The guitar riff that takes you from the intro to the verse is actually quite good. I can't say the same for the rest of the song. It sounds like the riff is taking you into something exciting, but it isn't.

Verdict - Rubbish

The 2nd Top 40 hit for Sash! and the 2nd to make number 2. Whilst it's predecessor was in French, this one was in Spanish. I always found this one a bit annoying, the shouting of the word "Ecuador" in particular.

Verdict - Rubbish

There was absolutely no avoiding this record at the time. I remember it appearing on Club Nation and then an advert for the single appeared in the advert break. It didn't take me too long to get absolutely sick of it. Not a bad record by any means but I thought this record was just alright in the first place and that's my view of it now.

Verdict - OK

I was such a rave purist in 1997 that I specifically remember pretending to people at the time that I didn't like this record because it wasn't rave. In reality I loved this record and ended up buying the single. I just gets better as it goes on, I love the final verse to it.

Verdict - Good

My biggest memory of this record was watching a TV show that I think was called "Holidays From Hell". It documented the holiday of 2 old ladies taking a holiday to Ibiza and their hotel was right in the middle of San Antonio amongst the Club 18-30 crowd and this was being blasted out repeatedly to the point that one of them was pointing out it was that song again. To be fair as a youngster at the time I would have hated hearing this all the time as well as I've never liked it.

Verdict - Rubbish

It had been over a year since Oasis had last been in the Top 40. In that time we had an Oasis tribute band plus many other acts try to make their own Oasis songs. They were so big that the record shops would open at midnight to enable people to buy this single. The actual record though is just a noise, the worst thing I'd heard Oasis do and that's really saying something.

Verdict - Rubbish

We've had the first posthumous hit for The Notorious BIG. Now we have the tribute record by his label boss and his widow. It interpolates "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. I would say this topped the charts because of what it was rather than how it sounds, it's a pretty poor record.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 12.5/30, or 42%. Slight drop on last week.

2007: The End? - June

We're half way through the year and whilst the scores have generally been poor we are yet to have a month to score zero.

The number of new entries in June is 47 which is the highest number so far in 2007. The proportion of indie/garage rock records is back to around a third of them and once again they collectively score zero points.

One has to look to the dance music world to find the best record which is a close contest between 2 old timers, Armand Van Helden with "NYC Beat" and Chemical Brothers with "Do It Again". There's not a lot between the 2 records but I'm going to go with "NYC Beat" for the simple fact I know the Chemical Brothers have a better record to come later in the year.

The rest of the dance records are pretty crap. We have Bob Sinclar doing a poor remake of "Everybody's Free" and Corenell vs Lisa Marie Experience doing a poor remake of "Keep On Jumpin". Then there's Calvin Harris which is obviously shit and Kim Sozzi with a record that sounds like it could be by Cascada.

R Kelly had a hit with "I'm A Flirt" which I remember but came after the last album of his I bought. That said I did quite enjoy listening and it gets full marks. No points for Kelly Rowland or Justin Timberlake, some could legitimately argue they're not really R&B.

Rap wise we have one record from the UK and one from America and both score zero. Dizzee Rascal is the UK one, I never thought much of him when he first broke through when I was enjoying some UK rap on Channel U. The American one is Mims who I've never heard of.

We're relying on more old timers for the remainder of the points. Both Erasure and Simply Red had their final Top 40 hits to date with Simply Red getting full marks and Erasure getting half.

The Zimmers were old timers literally. A big group of OAPs got together to record a cover of "My Generation". Obviously not as good as the original but still worthy of half marks.

That just leaves the worst record which goes to Paramore with "Misery Business". I'm too old to know whether they were considered a credible guitar band or not, but to me they just sound like McFly with a female singer.

Here's a list of the records with the best on top, worst at the bottom and the good ones in green, OK ones in amber and rubbish ones in red (and in no particular order):

Score: 11%

Here's a look at the chart:

It's been a very up and down year so far but will we get our first zero month?

Top 30 in 1998 Reviewed: Week 30

Here's my weekly look at the Top 30 from 26 years ago. The plan is for these posts to go out at 17:30 on a Wednesday.

So this is the top 30 from this week in 1998 with my verdict on each record:

The final Top 40 hit of the 90s for Massive Attack who went from having their highest charting Top 40 hit to their lowest. The fact that many people would have owned the "Mezzanine" album by this point would have been a factor. I own the album but not any of their singles.

Verdict - Good

The Top 40 debut for Leann Rimes. I once took part in a quiz where a question was who charted in 1997 with "How Do I Live" to which I confidently answered Leann Rimes. The answer was Trisha Yearwood who reached number 66 with it. Leann Rimes was in 1998 and is the better known version. Although not the first person younger than me to chart, I do recall a younger Leann Rimes charting making me start to think have I missed the boat already in my music career.

Verdict - Rubbish

Yes that's right, Billie Myers had another Top 40 hit. Just one more though. With Billie Piper now establishing herself I guess there was only room for one Billie in the pop world. I do prefer this to anything I've heard by Billie Piper but that's not saying much.

Verdict - Rubbish

It had been nearly 4 years since the Beastie Boys had last been in the Top 40. The last time they'd been in the Top 40 they had hits to show they were to be taken seriously as a rap act. This is more of the same in that respect and this became their highest charting single to date.

Verdict - Good

There was a pub near where I grew up that had live music at the weekend. When I say live music I mean a singer, ocassionally one with a guitar and a karaoke machine. They'd sing the classics, but this song immediately slotted into the sets and I recall one particular night I swear the singer did this song around 5 or 6 times. Needless to say I got sick of it very quickly.

Verdict - Rubbish

We've had the BBC theme tune to the World Cup in the Top 40, now it was time for the ITV theme tune. It won the chart battle of the two and I'm inclined to think that this was the better of the two records. It's an interesting collaboration. It was the penultimate Top 40 hit to date for Jean Michel Jarre and was his first without "Oxygene" in the title. Apollo 440 had a few more hits to go.

Verdict - Good

We'd already seen the beginning and end of Hollyoaks actor Will Mellor's Top 40 career in 1998. Now it was the turn of Coronation Street actor Matthew Marsden. It's a ballad and it is predictably crap, but he'd be back.

Verdict - Rubbish

I think many people had forgot about Boyz II Men by 1998 but that was the year their Top 40 career lasted until with this being their final hit. Amongst the writers of this record was Puff Daddy which seems appropriate as in a way he's the equivalent of Boyz II Men in the rap world.

Verdict - Rubbish

I can't claim to have been a big fan of Garbage back in the 90s, I could take or leave their music. They are one of those bands who have got better with age though, or it just took me a while to realise how good their music was. Either way this is a good record.

Verdict - Good

The highest charting Top 40 hit for Des'ree which was her penultimate Top 40 hit to date. It had also been 4 years since she'd last been in the Top 40. This record has been widely ridiculed for it's stupid lyrics and I'm inclined to agree.

Verdict - Rubbish

I remember watching the video to this and thinking what the fuck? It's a boy band trying to be gangsta rappers and is absolutely ridiculous. I stand by that, but at the same time I couldn't help but like it. I would say this is one of my guilty pleasures.

Verdict - Good

This was originally the Top 40 debut for Don Henley back in 1985. I have no idea why it was rereleased in 1998, but when that happened it reached the same peak of number 12 that it did originally. One of those big 80s hits that's hard not to like.

Verdict - Good

This was the first R Kelly single not to appear on an R Kelly album and as a result the first R Kelly single that I don't own a recording of. I do remember acknowledging that fact in the pre-YouTube days because I would have quite liked to have it. I could have bought the Sparkle album though which was entirely written and produced by R Kelly but I didn't think of that.

Verdict - Good

We were approaching the end of the speed garage era from a Top 40 perspective with one of the final Top 40 hits being a remix of one of the early ones. Still a decent record that hasn't lost any of the charm of the original. There was one more Top 40 hit from 187 Lockdown to come.

Verdict - Good

This brings back memories of the god awful TV show "Man O Man" that was hosted by Chris Tarrant. This was the theme music to that as I recall. The TV show and record suited each other though given how dreadful they both were.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was a cover of an Everything but the Girl record and knowing that fact I can tell that it is. I always thought of this record as being Billie Ray Martin mark 2. You may recall from my Billie Ray Martin reviews that I wasn't a fan and I'd say this was worse if anything.

Verdict - Rubbish

The 3rd Top 40 hit for Ultra Nate and final one of the 90s. She'd previous sang that she'd found a cure and now she's singing that she needs a new kind of medicine. The album these came from was called "Situation: Critical". You sense a theme going on here. Once again I find this pretty average, but I would recommend checking out "Divine Love" from that album.

Verdict - OK

One of the big songwriting teams in the R&B world is Rodney Jerkins, Fred Jerkins and LaShawn Daniels. This was their first Top 40 hit as songwriters. Both Brandy and Monica had only been in the lower reaches of the Top 40 prior to this. I remember hearing how great Brandy's "Never Say Never" album was supposed to be and given I liked this song I decided to buy it. This song aside it really wasn't that great and I ended up selling it.

Verdict - Good

There have been numerous mixes of "Cafe Del Mar" over the years. The original came out in 1993 and this was the first version to make the Top 40. It's a German trance record that's named after the famous bar of the same name in Ibiza. It's a good advert for a holiday to Ibiza I have to say.

Verdict - Good

This was the 30th Top 40 hit for The Bee Gees which was their penultimate Top 40 hit to date and final one of the 90s. It was also Top 40 hit number 15 for Celine Dion. It was originally written for the Saturday Night Fever musical. Seems a bit of an odd one for it to be honest, it sounds too Celine Dion for it really.

Verdict - Rubbish

Another record that's sort of related to the World Cup. "Mas Que Nada" appeared in the Nike advert which featured the Brazil football team. This was a dance version of the record. It's a good summer anthem.

Verdict - Good

The final Top 40 hit of the 90s for Peter Andre who would disappear for a few years after this. It's a Disney song so is slow and boring and a bit cringeworthy. I will however say it's nowhere near as bad as the cover of "A Whole New World" that he did with Katie Price when he reappeared.

Verdict - Rubbish

Billie Piper became the youngest person to debut at the top of the charts at just 15 when this record came out. It raises the question how does one manage to top the charts at such a young age. The answer is go to the Sylvia Young Theatre school like pretty much every other British pop singer seemed to do.

Verdict - Rubbish

When I was reviewing the Finley Quaye hits coming into the Top 40 I thought Eagle-Eye Cherry would be just around the corner. Here he is with his Top 40 debut and best known hit. He's the brother of Neneh Cherry and his real name is Eagle-Eye believe it or not. The only positive thing I can say about this record is that's he's better than his sister, but that's not saying much.

Verdict - Rubbish

On May 31st 1998 we had the news that Geri Halliwell had left the Spice Girls. The same day B*witched topped the charts with this their debut single. They really couldn't have timed it any better. I immediately thought come back the Spice Girls all is forgiven. Actually I didn't because the Spice Girls weren't finished yet, but this is every bit as bad as your average Spice Girls record.

Verdict - Rubbish

It had been 2.5 years since Ace Of Base had been in the Top 40. Their previous hit was the dance record "Beautiful Life". This comeback single could simply be described as a pop single. It made sense given the music scene at the time and proof that it is possible to make a good pop song.

Verdict - Good

It had been 20 years since Grease and this record was rereleased to mark the occasion. Given how it was one of those films that seemed impossible to have not seen multiple times together with how the videos and soundtrack albums had been available for some time I'm wondering who felt the need to buy this single. Clearly people did.

Verdict - Rubbish

The fist time I heard this record was on the radio one morning when I was half asleep and I remember later on that day thinking what was that good tune I heard on the radio earlier. I soon found out what it was. It was the solo Top 40 debut for Fugees member Pras so should really come as no surprise I'd like it given how good the Fugees were.

Verdict - Good

Confession time. When I first came across this record my initial thought was questioning whether it was a cover of "Freek 'N You" by Jodeci having not heard that record for years. I soon realised that it was a completely different record but took a few years for me to find out this was a cover of a Silk record that topped the charts in America in 1993. Obviously the original is better, but having been familiar with this cover for a long time before I heard the original I do like it.

Verdict - Good

Jamiroquai had several well known hits but this was their only chart topper. Perhaps not the one you would guess, but the fact it was from a film and didn't appear on an album would have no doubt helped it. It's not your typical Jamiroquai record, but the funk is still there and that's what makes the record.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 15.5/30, or 52%. We're above 50%, can we stay there?
