Beverley Knight has had a pretty successful music career and is reasonably well known. It's also fair to say she's been around for longer than many people realise. Her commercial peak came in the early 21st century but she made her Top 40 debut back in 1995 with "Flavour Of The Old School" which made number 33.
This was Top 40 hit number 3 for her and she'd not charted higher than number 21 at this point. What may have been holding her back from greater success was being a British R&B singer. British R&B has never really been that well received and is often overshadowed by American R&B.
She finally had a Top 10 hit in 2002 with "Shoulda Woulda Coulda". She wrote that in collaboration with American songwriter Craig Wiseman. The video to that was shot in South Africa but looked like it could have been America and no doubt there were people who thought she was American when it came out. I was one of those people who thought that.
