UK Charts Best Year Search: 2016

What's this all about?

Top 40

Best Song: Desiigner - Panda

For the first time in a long time we finally have a record in the Top 40 that doesn't have commercial music written all over it. I'd never heard this record or of Desiigner which is part of the explanation really. Streaming was counting towards the chart by this point and what we are likely seeing is what the kids are actually listening to rather than what the media says they should be listening to.

Worst Song: Zara Larrson - Lush Life

I was surprised to discover this record isn't by Rihanna. It may just as well have been by her though. It is s sad state of affairs though that other singers decide to sing in the same style as Rihanna. She is an absolutely dreadful singer. I even remember this record coming on at a work Christmas party and me and my colleagues were agreeing just how dreadful Rihanna is.

Top 40 Review

In 2016 the charts caught my attention for the first time in a long time. This was because Drake was looking on course to beat Bryan Adams for most weeks at number 1. He fell at the final hurdle in the end making it to 15 weeks. He was 12 weeks in at the time of this Top 40. The amazing thing was that nobody seemed to know the actual tune, myself included. I've heard it now, it's rubbish.

This is perhaps the beginning of rap music on it's road to becoming the dominant genre in the Top 40. This is a good thing because there are 2 rap records that get half marks which are "Don't Mind" by Kent Jones and "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots. The only rap records to get zero are by Drake of which there are 3.

There's actually 4 Drake records in the Top 40 with the other one being as featured artist on a Rihanna record. Rihanna has 3 records in the Top 40 herself, as does Rihanna clone Zara Larsson. Needless to say it's a big fat zero for these records too.

Tropical house is the biggest genre in this chart and they're amongst the weakest records I've ever heard. It sounds almost like a compromise between EDM and Ed Sheeran and none of those records are to my liking.

EDM itself isn't too far behind, but electropop is a lot more low key. There is no Ed Sheeran, his clones are a bit more low key too.

As the music that's replaced it is a bit rubbish though we once again have a rubbish score.

Score: 2

Table

If ever you needed proof the charts were getting worse, 9 of the 10 most recent years are in the bottom 10:
