UK Number 40s: Light Of The World - I Shot The Sheriff (1981)

Light of the World may not be a name familiar to the casual music listener, but they were very much a big name in the jazz funk scene.

This was their Top 40 debut, a cover of the Bob Marley record. It was the 2nd of 3 versions that have made the Top 40 to date, but the Bob Marley original isn't one of them. The other 2 versions were covers by Eric Clapton and Warren G.

4 weeks later Beggar & Co, who were 3 members of Light of the World were in the Top 40 with their debut "(Somebody) Help Me Out" which would peak at 15. Then 2 weeks after that fell out the Top 40, Light of the World were back with their 2nd and final Top 40 hit "I'm So Happy/Time" which would peak at 35. Beggar & Co had one further hit with "Mule (Chant No2)" which came later on that year.

Group member Bluey had already formed Incognito as a side project by this point who are still going today after many albums. He would have 5 Top 40 hits in the 90s with them including Top 10 hit "Always There".
