UK Number 40s: Commodores Wonderland (1980)

We've made it to the 80s and we begin with what is becoming a common theme, a number 40 from an act who's also had a number 1.

The Commodores generally don't do thing by halves when it comes to their Top 40 career. Their debut hit "Machine Gun" did reach the half way point peaking at 20 in 1974. After that, 5 of their Top 40 hits made the Top 10 and the other 4 charted between 30 and 40.

Their only number one came in 1978 with "Three Times A Lady" which followed a number 38 a couple of months earlier with "Flying High" which came from the same album.

In 1979 came the Top 10 singles "Sail On" and "Still", the latter of which was an American number one. They came from the "Midnight Magic" album and this was the 3rd single to be released. It didn't do much better in America making number 25.

This was the first Top 40 hit for The Commodores since their debut that wasn't written by Lionel Richie. It was written by Milan Williams who also wrote "Machine Gun".

It would be the last Commodores Top 40 hit to feature Lionel Richie. They would have one final Top 40 hit in 1985 with "Nighshift".
