Top 30 in 1999 Reviewed: Week 52

Here's my weekly look at the Top 30 from 26 years ago. The plan is for these posts to go out at 17:30 on a Sunday.

Here is the Top 40 in full.

I've decided against repetition from previous weeks moving forward so will only feature the records I'm reviewing for the first time. I also won't repeat the reviews from the Top 20 in 1999 Reviewed posts.

Once again my opinions are inevitably going to differ from other people, but I'm not trying to convince anyone something is good or rubbish, I'm simply giving my opinion.

So this is the records new to the top 30 from this week in 1999 with my verdict on each record:

If you went raving in 1999 then you would be hearing horns all night. Hearing the whistles and horns on the tapes sounded great, but at the rave they'd be so loud you could barely heard the music at times. Here we have some already recorded horns on a record. Not a great idea really, but I guess it's not bad.

Verdict - OK

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 8/30, or 27%. Just one more week to go.

This was the 10th Top 40 hit for the Beastie Boys which made them the 6th rap act to make it to double figures in terms of Top 40 hits. Their music got better as time went on, it was questionable in the beginning but then records like this are what I call proper hip hop.

Verdict - Good

This was the final Top 40 hit to date for Leftfield and the first Top 40 hit for Roots Manuva. I guess you could call this the 20th century handing over to the 21st century. Not a bad record but it's nothing special.

Verdict - OK

Salt-N-Pepa finished the 20th century as the rap act with the most Top 40 hits with 14. However this would be their final Top 40 hit to date and quite a number of rap acts have since overtaken them. Like the other 13 Salt-N-Pepa hits this is shit.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was the 2nd Top 40 hit for Swedish group A*Teens and their 2nd Abba cover. I do recall Abba being celebrated a lot around this time and we also had the 90s version of Abba in Steps clocking up the hits. This is the last thing we needed.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 8.5/30, or 28%. It's not likely to get much better.

More trance music from 1999. This was the only Top 40 hit for Lustral but they were the same people as The Space Brothers. This one is trance with a breakbeat and I do like a bit of breakbeat. That's what makes this record really.

Verdict - Good

The 2nd and final Top 40 hit to date for Gouryella which was one of many aliases of Ferry Corsten. I will admit this one is a bit on the cheesy side and probably inspired some pretty dreadful trance records that came out in the 21st century. I like it though, I guess this is the way to make it.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 10/30, or 33%. Not long to go now.

Dance music was so big in 1999 that it seemed like everyone was jumping on the bandwagon. This included The Lightning Seeds with this record, a departure from their more guitar orientated sound from a couple of years earlier. It's actually a decent record and was their final Top 40 hit to date.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 10.5/30, or 35%. I feel I was right in predicting the last week that was above 50% would be the last one.

So this is the records new to the top 30 from this week in 1999 with my verdict on each record:

My assessment of Beck's Top 40 career is that he started with "Loser" and then everything he did since all sounds the same. This undoubtedly follows the Beck formula but it's actually a bit more interesting than his other record(s) and I actually don't mind this.

Verdict - OK

With this record Puff Daddy became just the 5th rap act to reach double figures for Top 40 hits after Salt-N-Pepa, 2Pac, LL Cool J and Busta Rhymes. This was the Top 40 debut for Mario Winans with his only other Top 40 hit being the 2004 chart topper "I Don't Wanna Know" which also featured Puff Daddy. It's a rather boring record.

Verdict - Rubbish

After charting high with pretty much every record they released during the heights of Britpop, Suede were charting in the lower reaches now the Britpop era was over. This record was produced by Steve Osborne, the man who worked extensively with Paul Oakenfold in the 90s. It's still a pretty dull record though.

Verdict - Rubbish

Primal Scream were back with another album. They made a point of changing their sound with each album, so with dance music as big as it had ever been in 1999 they made a dance record. Makes a lot of sense and they've done a pretty good job with this record.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 11/30, or 37%. We stay the same.

This was a chart topper in the year 2000 but originally charted in 1999. I remember this in 1999 and was quite baffled why it returned to the charts more successfully the following year as there were so many better dance records that could have done the same. I don't mind it though.

Verdict - OK

Marc Anthony is best known in the UK as the musician who was once married to Jennifer Lopez. I'd guess many would struggle to name one of his records though. This was his only solo effort in the Top 40. It's a Latin pop record and based on this I don't think we've been missing out on his lack of chart success in the UK.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 11/30, or 37%. Can we get to 50% one more time?

So this is the records new to the top 30 from this week in 1999 with my verdict on each record:

With Pete Waterman enjoying success with Steps, Matt Stock and Matt Aitken started writing records for their own version of Steps. This was the Top 40 debut for Scooch and it's much the sort of formula that Steps used and could just as easily be a Steps record. Obviously it's shit then.

Verdict - Rubbish

Shola Ama was back with a 2nd album and this was the lead single. It was just the 2nd Top 40 hit written by Norwegian songwriting duo Stargate who had written "S Club Party" which was still in the Top 40 one place below this record. It's not a great comeback and it flopped.

Verdict - Rubbish

In the UK I would say that Semisonic are best known for "Secret Smile" but in America this one was their big hit. I would put both records on a par when it comes to how catchy they are, but neither record is really my cup of tea.

Verdict - Rubbish

Whilst his former Stone Roses band mate John Squires only managed one album with his post Stone Roses band The Seahorses, Ian Brown had managed to make it to a 2nd solo album of which this was the lead single. It's more of the same really and not to my liking.

Verdict - Rubbish

It had been over a year since Cher topped the charts with "Believe" and this was the final single to be taken from the album of the same name. It's another dance record, but this time there's a Latin flavour to it and it sounds like it could be a Gloria Estefan record.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 7.5/30, or 25%. An improvement but still poor.

This was the only Top 40 hit for Tal Bachman who is the son of Randy Bachman from Bachman Turner Overdrive. I'm surprised this record only got to number 30 in the charts as it seemed a pretty big record at the time. Not my cup of tea.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was the final Top 40 hit to date for Barbra Streisand which came 33 years after her Top 40 debut. It was also the only Top 40 hit for Vince Gill. The songwriter of this was Richard Marx long after his UK Top 40 career was over. It's pretty bland.

Verdict - Rubbish

I have to say I do like the video to this record. It's a funny video and when it appeared on the music channels which it did a lot I would keep it on and watch it. Unfortunately the song itself isn't really up to much, just a bit of backing music for the video really.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 6.5/30, or 22%. A sign we're heading to the 21st century.

Another week another German trance record in the Top 40. This was the only Top 40 hit for Liquid Child who were Tobias Menguser and Jurgen Herbath. This was one of the trance records that I particularly liked at the time.

Verdict - Good

This seemed a bit of an odd collaboration. It was the 2nd time Bono appeared in the Top 40 without U2 having previously collaborated with Clannad in the 80s. It's not a bad record but it's nothing special.

Verdict - OK

This record uses the same sample as "Son of a Gun" by JX. Dance music was moving so quickly in the 90s though it made sense to have a 99 style record using that sample given how big the JX record was at the time. It was the first of 2 Top 40 hits for Big Time Charlie.

Verdict - Good

This record features vocals by Bernard Sumner. It's one of those records you need to listen to the whole way through to really appreciate, there's a lot going on in it and takes a complete change in direction at one point. A solid effort.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 11/30, or 37%. Heading in the right direction.

The year 2000 wasn't here yet, but there was a lot of hype about it arriving with the 2000 on the end of this record being an example. It was a dance record with a female rapper on the verses and ZZ Top doing the chorus. It's as bad as it sounds.

Verdict - Rubbish

I was a big fan of the Lucid debut "I Can't Help Myself" and quite liked their follow up "Crazy" too. For their 3rd and final Top 40 hit to date they turned down the tempo and covered "Stay With Me Till Dawn" by Judie Tzuke. I love the original of this but this cover doesn't really do it any justice.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 10/30, or 33%. We stay the same.

Point Break are yet another long forgotten boy band. It's members included Brett Adams and David Oliver who had both previously been in Byker Grove but a few years had passed since. This was their Top 40 debut, it's awful.

Verdict - Rubbish

This was the fourth and final original Top 40 hit to date for The Space Brothers. It's a vocal trance record and there seems to be more of a focus on the vocals than the music itself. That's not a good thing in my opinion, but it's not bad.

Verdict - OK

This is where the solo of Gary Barlow career initially came to an end. He had called upon the services of Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Kristian Lundin to make this record, but that couldn't stop this record from flopping.

Verdict - Rubbish

The Britpop era was over but nobody told the Longpigs who were back in the Top 40 for one final hit. It's chart position was more or less reflective of their Top 40 career overall but the band split shortly after this. I guess they're going a bit American on this record, still crap though.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 10/30, or 33%. Slight improvement on last week.

The final original Top 40 hit to date for Everything But The Girl. I do remember at this point they very much seemed to be considered a part of the dance music scene. Personally speaking I never liked them, their dance record all sounded the same and the dreary singing from Tracey Thorn has always irritated me.

Verdict - Rubbish

We've never really had much opera music in the Top 40 so for Andrea Bocelli to score 2 Top 40 hits in the 90s is quite and achievement. It's not a bad record once it gets to the chorus, but I'm not going to be in a hurry to listen to it again.

Verdict - OK

In 1999 Jamiroquai released "Canned Heat" which is probably the best thing they've ever done. This was the follow up that had a lot to live up to. It obviously isn't as good as "Canned Heat", but still a decent effort and contributed to my decision to buy the "Synkronized" album.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 11.5/30, or 38%. That's quite an improvement.

The final Top 40 hit to date for All Seeing I which was co-written by Jarvis Cocker and features Phil Oakey from the Human League on vocals. It was apparently based on "Space Oddity" by David Bowie and "Rocket Man" by Elton John, but it just sounds like a poor mans "Blue Monday".

Verdict - Rubbish

The demise of Britpop didn't stop Suede from continuing to have Top 40 hits despite them being one of the bigger names associated with it. The big hits had finished for them though so we're now into territory I don't remember. I didn't have much hope for this record and it's as I expected. Still one more Suede record to listen to later on this year.

Verdict - Rubbish

Even in this small sector of the Top 40 we seem to be getting a new trance record every week in 1999. Generally speaking that's no bad thing, I like a lot of the trance music that was coming out in 1999. However this one is moving into the cheesy vocal shit territory that became big as we went into the 21st century.

Verdict - Rubbish

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 7.5/30, or 25%. That's a terrible score.

As you may have guessed, this is a cover of the Guns N Roses record. It's a lot more mellow and sounds like the sort of thing you'd expect to hear on a John Lewis advert. A terrible cover and Rolling Stone readers named it the 4th worst cover of all time.

Verdict - Rubbish

The penultimate Top 40 hit to date for Tin Tin Out which came before their collaboration with Emma Bunton. Wendy Page may not be a household name but at this point she'd recently wrote the number one record "Because We Want To" by Billie and "Perfect Moment" by Martine McCutcheon. Doesn't sound too promising then, but this ones not bad.

Verdict - OK

Matt Darey was one of the big names in trance around this time and this was his first time in the Top 40 under the name Lost Tribe alongside Red Jerry. I remember this being a pretty big record at the time and was one of the reasons I thought commercial dance music had improved massively in 1999.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 12/30, or 40%. We stay the same.

Caprice is a model who decided to branch out into music and ended up having 2 Top 40 hits which both made number 24. This was the first of those. When a non-musician decides to release a record you generally expect it to be crap. More often than not it is and this is no exception.

Verdict - Rubbish

You probably didn't think that Mark Morrison was still having hits in 1999. This was his last original Top 40 hit to date. It was also the final Top 40 hit to date for Conner Reeves. I would say that Mark Morrison has done better and Connor Reeves has never made a good record as far as I'm aware.

Verdict - Rubbish

Yet another German trance record in the Top 40 in 1999. This record was originally from 1995 and would end up featuring in the film "Kevin & Perry Go Large", a film that sounds right up my street but I've never watched for some reason.

Verdict - Good

If we give the records which were good 1 point each and those which were OK half a point, the final score is 12/30, or 40%. Now we're slipping.

Mercury Rev were a band I remember a lot of people at university were into but I'd never heard of them myself. Now that I am familiar with their music I really don't get what the fuss was all about. I guess we all have our individual tastes.

Verdict - Rubbish
