The Christmas Charts - 1991

After 3 consecutive years of Christmas number ones which were all Christmas songs and involved Christmas it looks like the record buying public had enough of Christmas records in 1991.

Funnily enough though the highest charting Christmas record once again came from Cliff Richard with "We Should Be Together" which made number 10. It was because of the Top of the Pops reruns that I discovered this record existed.

Simon & Garfunkel were in the Top 40 with the double a-side "Hazy Shade Of Winter / Silent Night - The 7 O Clock News", the latter being the Christmas record. It was original recorded in 1966 and was basically a mash up of the Christmas carol and the 7 O Clock News being read out.

Shakin Stevens was back with yet another Christmas record with "I'll Be Home This Christmas". It's his last Christmas Top 40 hit to date and he's only had 2 original Top 40 hits since.

The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl returned to the Top 40 with "Fairytale Of New York" which made number 36 on this occasion and was the first time it had re-entered the Top 40.

The Christmas number one was the double a-side "Bohemian Rhapsody/These Are The Days Of Our Lives". This was the 2nd time "Bohemian Rhapsody" had been Christmas number one, previously doing so in 1975. It was re-released following the recent death of Freddie Mercury.
