Once again we have another big name in the UK Number 40s series. Cream were together for a little over 2 years but are seen by many as one of the all time greats. How did this only reach 40 then?
The Top 40 record of Cream isn't exactly great, none of their singles made the Top 10. However the same could be said of several big name bands of this era. They were an albums band rather than a singles band. That could be an explanation as to why this only made number 40 except for one thing, this was never on an album. It was on the soundtrack to the film "The Savage Seven".
It was released in May 1968, the same month the band decided to split up. At the same time it was in the middle of their career music wise. This was the 4th of 7 singles and at this point their first 2 albums had been released but their final 2 albums hadn't.
Not only was this the final number 40 of 1968, it was the final number 40 of the 60s as no records peaked at 40 in 1969.
What did happen in 1969 though was Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker of Cream teamed up with Steve Winwood of Traffic, the band who had the prior number 40 to this, to form Blind Faith. They had no Top 40 hits but their only album reached number one.
